Powder Coating Information

Why Powder Coat

Powder coating is the most cost effective way to enhance many kinds of metals...capable of outlasting countless liquid paint applications from can or gun. Powder coating may cost a little more... yet powder coating won't chip, flake, or peel, and best of all, avoids compromising the base material.

R and R Specialties promise to you is.... simply unsurpassed quality!

A product...free of environmental hazard.

Held in your hand the pigmented dry powder used in powder coating looks and feels like colored baby powder. It's also just as safe. Mainly because it's completely free of environmentally hazardous VOC... (volatile organic compounds) found in liquid paints. Oversprayed powder is recycled. Hardly any solid waste is generated. Isn't it refreshing to find a process that complies with the nation's environmental laws-without increasing the cost of production.

Whether your interest is... restoration, show applications or industrial, preparation is the key to long lasting quality. Your components, depending upon base material, will be carefully cleaned using a mixture of mild to aggressively granular media. Personal attention begins with a hard sanding process to create surface "bite" assuring adhesion and consistent powder flow.

Our pre-baking cycle purges trapped moisture, oils and gasses that cause surface contamination so they will not affect the quality of your powder coating project.

Using a high temperature silicone media, all machined, threaded or "mating" surfaces are carefully masked after the pre-baking cycle. Followed by an additional chemical cleaning step, completing the preparation process.

Next the parts are coated using a special electrostatic spray gun that is charged with 30,000 - 90,000 volts. This process applies the powder in a smooth and even coating.

Once coated, the parts are cured in our convection style oven at approximately 375 degrees where the powder coating material melts into an even smooth finish.

After curing the parts are removed from the oven and allowed to cool at which time your parts will be individually packaged in plastic bags and made ready for Shipment. Powder Coating usually requires approximately 7 to 10 working days for most jobs, some custom jobs may require additional time.

An Attractive Durable Finish

In fact, powder makes an attractive finish for almost any metal part. We can accommodate parts and components flarge and small. We can powder coat a car frame or a bolt. No job is too small.

Environmentalyl Safe!

Powder is usually applied in a single coat, which is very efficient and provides excellent protection against corrosion. Powder is not only a durable and attractive finish. It is also easy to use, cost effective, and environmentally friendly. Since it contains no solvents, it is subject to fewer reporting, storage, and disposal requirements than liquid paints. Powder releases negligible emissions when curing. Waste material can be swept up and reused or packaged for conventional disposal. This all means lower costs and less hassle.

A Show Quality Product

Clear Coat

We highly recommend a clear powder coat on top of any color you choose. The addition of the clear significantly increases the durability.

Custom Colors

The powder coating process uses finely ground particles that melt and fuse onto the part when placed in the oven to cure. Unlike solvent-based wet paint, you cannot change the powder coating formulation in any way. It cannot be lightened or darkened by adding another powder. You've got to use it as it is formulated. Custom match colors are available but are very expensive and take several weeks to produce and must be purchase in a large quantity. If you are interested in having a custom color produced, please contact us:

In-house burn off oven to turn existing finish to ash or to "bake out" any oils or grease that may be inside the part. In-house sandblasting to remove existing finish or prepare surface to accept the powder coating. High temperature masking material is applied or silicon plugs are inserted to protect areas that should not be coated. After the powder coating is applied and removed from the oven, the part is inspected for quality. If we're not happy with the finish, the process starts all over again.
